The Event:
The New York MASTERCLASS will take place at (venue TBC) on July 12th 2012

The Theme:
Tourism: TRANSforming the Global City?
Today more than 50% of the worlds population live in cities. Global cities, through their ‘creative class’ (Florida, 2002) are said to exhibit common values of creativity, individuality, difference and merit, as well as high levels of workforce polarization and spatial and ethnic segregation.  Thus, global cities are both manifestation of, and central to, the transformations taking place under globalization. As nodes of international trade and ‘advanced producer services’ (Sassen, 1991), global cities offer synergies of innovation and creativity in which the tourist can be located as both producer and consumer. The multifaceted environment of global cities constitute their sense of place and is critical to the ways their cultural meaning is experienced by local residents and by tourists. In many of these urban environments tourism has emerged as a key driver of development and redevelopment (regeneration). Tourism makes a significant contribution to the economic, social and hybrid cultural character of global cities, where inequalities and segmentation are highly visible (Curtis, 2010). In this sense, tourism is enmeshed in the rescaling of relationships between local, national and global space in the ongoing transformation of global cities.

This MASTERCLASS explores the influence of tourism on today’s global cities, as well as the evolving potential of tourism to shape and sustain both existing and new global cities in the future. Over four sessions of lectures, seminars and workshops, the discussion will focus on the intersection of a range of influences on tourism in the global city, including: city space planning and management, the role of events and their legacy, tourism and the creative industries, city branding, as well the economic, social and cultural impact of tourism on global city populations. In order to aid a more comprehensive understanding of this complex relationships a pool of internationally established academics and professionals in the field will draw on a variety of concepts, theories and case studies, to provide international perspectives geared to delivering an informed analysis of the role of tourism in transforming the global city. Such approaches necessitate engagement with the rich milieu that characterizes tourism and which demand a diverse range of evolving and flexible responses in planning, development and management practice. Thus, the New York MASTERCLASS will engage with some of the most critical concerns intersecting economic, social and environmental developments in today’s and tomorrows Global City.
