MASTERClass 2012 will address some of the most pressing social, economic, environmental and political issues facing global tourism today. The Masterclass series is designed to raise awareness and enhance understanding of the challenges faced by stakeholders associated with the multi-faceted phenomenon of tourism, as well as to highlight the potential of tourism for positive outcomes within broader trajectories of public governance. These sessions provide a forum for stimulating and targeted discussion designed to deliver informed insights on a range of contemporary issues in tourism related planning, development, management and governance.
In themed morning and afternoon sessions each Masterclass will be delivered through a blend of individual lectures, seminars, workshops and discussions. The theme of each Masterclass is indicated herein, but in broad terms the 2012 Masterclass series will address:
* The challenges of tourism as a multi-sectoral and diffuse social phenomenon
* Tourism resource stewardship in the era of globalization
* Ethical governance, sustainability and economic development
Who Should Attend:
The Masterclass will be of interest to participants from a variety of educational, business and cultural organisations, particular those from national and regional tourism organisations, local and regional government, destination planning and management organisations, heritage organisations, the creative industries, event managers and urban planners. The Masterclass also provides an ideal platform for sharing cutting edge research and practice and thus is likely to attract interest from the academic community.
Delivery:
Drawing on a variety of concepts, theories and case studies international perspectives on contemporary tourism will be delivered through a series of lectures, seminars, workshops and discussions led by leading experts from a range of specialisms. English is the working language of Masterclass.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to understand the range and scope of contemporary issues facing stakeholders in the tourism sector, including the drivers of change in both the production and consumption of tourism products and services. Through in-depth dialogue in a critical yet supportive environment, participants will be able to relate the outcomes of the Masterclass to their own organizational and/or community context and thus inform policy, strategy, planning, as well as the implementation of, or opposition to, related change.
Planned Outputs:
The planned outputs of the Masterclass are to enhance participants’ knowledge of current trends and challenges associated with tourism and to enhance the capacity of the participants to lead critical action in addressing these. In addition, the Masterclass will enhance participants potential to respond to emerging change in their organisations and communities and thus support collaboration and cooperation at a broader level.
Publication:
Masterclass material (lecture notes, papers, reflective accounts) developed by leading scholars in the field will be published by the Educational Travel Foundation in a series entitled Notes from a Masterclass: Tourism Planning, Development and Management.
