Tourism and Sustainable Futures: Beyond 2015
Tourism can be both a challenge to, and driver of, sustainable development. This MASTERCLASS explores the opportunities and challenges inherent in the transition towards sustainable futures and tourisms role in, and contribution to, these. Over four complementary sessions (lectures, seminars and workshops), the discussion will focus on holistic approach to the development and management of tourism and its impacts and outcomes in order to aid a more comprehensive understanding of this complex adaptive system which embraces economic, social, cultural, environmental and political spheres. Drawing on a variety of concepts, theories and case studies, international perspectives on contemporary tourism will be addressed by established academics and professionals in the field (speakers to be confirmed in March 2012). Such approaches necessitate engagement with the rich milieu that characterizes tourism and which demand a diverse range of evolving and flexible responses in planning, development and management practice. In suggesting sustainable pathways beyond 2015 the Neuchatel MASTERCLASS will engage with some of the most critical concerns now facing tourism as it intersects with and influences developments both in destination regions, as well as in generating markets.
